When we think of trends, we may think of clothing and hairstyles, but trends can happen anywhere at any time. In fact, trends are also incredibly prevalent in business, especially with HR trends. New technologies or ideologies come around and can really shake up the business world. These trends often aim to make things easier or more affordable for companies or help them to offer better products and services to customers.

While trends occur in nearly part of business, one area where we are beginning to see a number of trends develop is in HR. But just what trends are going to shape HR in 2020 and potentially beyond? With that in mind, this blog post is going to go over a few of the trends that could end up shaping HR in 2020.

The Growth of the Remote Workforce

One of the biggest and most prevalent trends in HR and business as a whole is the growth of the remote workforce. More and more people are either working from home completely, or working remotely every now and then. In fact, around the world, 70% of all workers work remotely at least once a week.

In addition to allowing people to work from home and enjoy a better work/life balance, there are several other benefits of remote work for everyone involved. However, more remote workers and teams could provide some unique challenges for HR personnel. Training, onboarding and communicating with remote teams are just some of the challenges that will need to be overcome.

More Technology Used in Recruiting

As you may have expected with how quickly technology is innovating, another massive trend in HR will be a shift to even more technology being used. There is a range of different tools, software, and technologies that are sure to gain widespread use in HR.

Technology can (and already has) a wide array of uses in HR including organizing and storing resumes (through ATS software), reducing hiring bias, automating mundane tasks, gaining important analytics, and countless others. Technology can also help with online training, too. All of these aforementioned technologies will help HR departments to be much more efficient and cost-effective.

A Modern Benefits Package

Another trend that is sure to shape HR in 2020 is offering a more modern benefits package. The needs and wants of employees are changing, and this should be reflected in the benefits package that a company offers. Some of the benefits that the workforce wants today are a good work/life balance, mental health support, healthcare, flexible hours, student loan assistance, and more.

If you don’t offer benefits that people want and will use, they will likely find an employer that does. Now, you don’t need to offer every benefit under the sun, but find a good mix that is not only affordable enough for you but is attractive to potential employees.

Additional Development and Training

Continuous learning is something many employees strive for. They don’t want to simply give up learning and improving their skills once they get a job. As a result, a trend that could shape HR going forward is offering additional development and training. People want access to workshops, coaching, and professional development.

If employees feel stagnant in a position and can’t challenge themselves or improve, it can often lead to complacency and a lack of effort. By offering continuous learning in some way, you will show that you care about your employees and want them to better themselves. This should lead to more happy, engaged, and loyal employees, who are going to want to work hard for you.

Performance Management Will Undergo Some Growth

An important part of HR for some time now has been the idea of performance management. Performance management relates to things like annual reviews, ratings, and feedback that is often all over the place. Unfortunately, these don’t often do a lot to curb bad behavior or reward good work.

While it might not go away completely, performance management will probably undergo some changes in 2020 and beyond. It will be more focused on continuous feedback and assistance to ensure everyone is where they need to be. With all the communication and collaboration tools out there, performance management could look very different, very soon.
