Education Through Music (ETM) partners with under-resourced schools to provide music as a core subject for all children and utilizes music education as a catalyst to improve overall achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence.
Headquartered in New York City, ETM has 50+ employees who collaborate with over 50 schools in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. In addition to these partnerships, ETM’s long-term goal is to have their teachers hired directly by the principals of the schools they are placed in.
The Challenge
ETM’s ability to help students through music depends directly on the quality and dedication of its teaching staff. Josephine Winfery has been ETM’s Director of Human Resources since 2017 and is responsible for leading the organization’s recruiting efforts.
Before using JazzHR, the team’s previous ATS was difficult to use and, as a result, slowed down their hiring process. It also lacked integrations with other solutions, like their Human Resource Information System (HRIS), which made it challenging to transition candidates into the new-hire onboarding stage.
The Solution
Josephine and her team knew they needed a more user-friendly system and started exploring new hiring platforms. After researching multiple applicant tracking systems, they saw JazzHR and fell in love with the easy-to-use interface.
“We chose JazzHR because, as a small nonprofit organization, it filled our needs effectively and allowed us to reduce our cost by two-thirds over what we were paying…it was cost-effective as well as very user-friendly,” explained Josephine.

Once candidates apply, Josephine and her team use JazzHR’s suite of screening tools, including integrations with third-party systems, to quickly and easily narrow down their talent pools.
“JazzHR has ensured that the hiring teams complete their evaluation seamlessly and in a timely manner,” Josephine said. “We also use the integrations with BambooHR and Zoom in addition to the added feature of texting applicants.”
Though the pandemic significantly slowed their programs in 2020, ETM is once again hiring K-8 Music Teachers for this upcoming Fall. They’re looking forward to continuing to use JazzHR to hire for what’s next.
